Brewery Visit: Myrcene Ale Company

Myrcene owner Mike Goergen started homebrewing while attending New England Culinary Institute. After winning multiple competitions for his creations, he has now taken his passion to Myrcene (Mur-seen, an essential oil found in hops, responsible for the peppery, spicy, balsam fragrance), located in the former home of 30 Mile Brewery off Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook. I’d never heard of this brewery before, which only added to my interest in exploring the space and sampling the brews.

So, how’s the beer? Very good across the board! Alexa, Add Beer to My Shopping List (IPA- 6.8%), was an excellent representation of the style, flavors of apricot, berry, and citrus. Orange-Ya Glad I Called? (Hefeweizen – 6.7%) was indeed fragrant with the addition of freshly cut oranges to the mix. Tessie (Kolsch – 5.0%), named for the owner’s beloved yellow lab, was a skillful pour, as was the Ragged Rock (Vienna Lager – 5%). I also was impressed with the Laid-Bock (Maibock – 6.9%) a German-style lager that balanced malt sweetness with a crisp, clean finish.

Though a little ‘out of the way,’ perhaps, the quality of the beer, cozy interior, and open-door policy for dogs (always a plus!) makes Myrcene Ale Company a place worthy of taking a detour on your Connecticut beer trail.
