Located in the old Six Pack Brewing location in Bristol (cheers to Mark Papi and best wishes) the owners of the new Trágmar Ale Works (who met at Six Pack!) are three passionate brewers with diverse backgrounds, united by their love for craft beer: Michael Godet, Jason Buck, and Chris Kerr. They are also united, it seems, by creating a space in Bristol that is as Irish-themed as humanly possible, with bright green walls, miniature Irish flags strung across the ceiling, and other Celtic décor on display throughout the space. The inspiration doesn’t stop there: the logo itself is inspired by Celtic mythology, honoring Tuirbe Trágmar, the legendary axe thrower of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Their logo embodies his magical axe, a Celtic Shield Knot for protection, a Crown for loyalty, and an Ogham inscription of “Trágmar.”
All cool ideas, but how’s the beer? While all the pour I tasted were very good, I want to highlight what I considered the clear winner: the Imperial Red Ale Cauldron of Plenty. As someone whose first choice of brew will always be an Irish red ale if available, I am beyond thrilled that a Rhode Island brewery will have some form of red ale on tap in a month other than March. And while Cauldron of Plenty weighed in at a hefty 8.0% ABV, it was such rich, deep, and malty perfection that I bought a four-pack to go on the way out, and you’ll see me back at Trágmar for sure during the year!
